The Course
Course Outline
This course has been categorised and graded according to the CEFR framework. The CEFR framework stands for the Common European Framework of Reference and is used to determine an English learner’s communicative competence in English. The structure of this framework is as follows:
Course Structure

Beginner (A1)

Elementary (A2)

Lower Intermediate (B1)

Upper Intermediate (B2)

Advanced (C1)

Proficient (C2)
Purpose of the Course
Any learner who is studying English as a foreign or second language would benefit from the content of the programme, provided that the learner possesses some basic knowledge of English.
The only basic requirement that someone who wishes to take the course must meet is a basic grasp of the English language. Applicants must have an elementary level( A2) of competence in their English communicative skills in order to benefit from this course. Without this basic knowledge, applicants would not be able to comprehend the course material. However, this is not a problem for the vast majority of those who wish to take this course because the majority of those who are seriously considering taking their IELTS assessments or any other exams in English already possess the ability to communicate in English at varying degrees of competence.
IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. If you would like to secure a spot in an English university, in an English course or a job in an English speaking country, then you are required to pass the IELTS assessments. Fortunately, this programme will prove immensely useful in your preparations.
The course has three main purposes
01
To provide students with the essential concepts and information needed to prepare for and be confident in the taking of IELTS assessments
02
To provide elementary learners with the key tools and concepts to progress to the intermediate stages (B1 and B2)
03
To assist intermediate (B1 and B2) learners to progress to the advanced stage (C1) of English communicative competence

Before Commencing the Course
The use of a dictionary will be essential to the study of this course because a dictionary contains relevant information relating to each of the five building blocks described previously. The student may make use of a digital dictionary or a paperback dictionary. However, the presence of a dictionary is important because several lessons will require that the student searches for information contained therein. Furthermore, specific concepts cannot be explained without reference to a dictionary.
It is recommended that the student obtain a paperback or digital copy of either the Oxford Dictionary or Cambridge Dictionary. These are not the only useful dictionaries but these are created, revised and published in accordance with the highest standard of English reception and production.
Whether the student selects the Cambridge Dictionary or Oxford Dictionary is a matter of personal preference. However, the chosen publication must contain information relating to the phonology of each word, the definitions, the spelling and the part of speech. To be sure that the selected dictionary contains the relevant information, see the page titled “How to use this dictionary.”
